What Is Express Entry?

Express Entry is Canada’s electronic system for managing skilled-worker immigration, launched January 1, 2015. It oversees applications under three federal economic programs:
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Candidates who meet eligibility enter a ranking pool and compete via the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Top-ranked profiles receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. Around 80% of applications are processed in six months or less.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, you must:
  • Be eligible for one of the three streams above.
  • Meet minimum requirements:
  • At least 1 year of recent full‑time (or equivalent part‑time) skilled work experience (NOC 0, A, B or TEER 0‑3).
  • Valid language test results (IELTS or CELPIP for English; TEF or TCF for French), less than 2 years old.
  • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to prove overseas degree is equivalent to Canadian qualification.

How It Works — Step by Step

1. Gather Documents

  • Language test results
  • ECA report
  • Work reference letters, pay slips etc.
  • Proof of funds (unless you have qualifying job offer)

2. Create Your Express Entry Profile

  • Sign in with GCKey or IRCC account and submit your profile.
  • You receive a CRS score (out of 1,200) based on age, education, language, experience, and skill transferability.
  • Additional points include: provincial nomination (up to 600), French proficiency, a sibling in Canada, Canadian study, or arranged employment. Previously job offers could boost CRS significantly.

3. Remain in the Express Entry Pool

  • Profile stays valid for 12 months. Update it if your situation changes (e.g., new test score, job offer, marriage).
  • Continue improving your CRS while waiting.

4. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

  • IRCC holds draws every few weeks. Candidates above cut‑off are invited. You then have 60 days to submit full application.

5. Submit Your PR Application

  • Upload all documents, pay application fees, and get biometric appointment.
  • Once approved, you'll receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and visa if needed.
